The Beatified Martyrs of Ireland, I: Patrick O'Healy, OFM, Conn O'Rourke, OFM On 22 September 1992, Pope John Paul II beatified seventeen Irish martyrs. The first step in bringing the beatification process to its successful conclusion was the setting up in 1975 of a Commission of professional historians to determine with all possible accuracy the facts of the life and death of each martyr. The members of the Commission were, from 1981, Patrick J. Corish (chairman); Benignus Millet, OFM (secretary); Kevin Kennedy, PP; Francis Finegan, SJ; F. X. Martin, OSA; Drs Ciaran Brady and Colm Lennon. The following auxiliary members were co-opted: John J. Meagher, PP; James Coombes, PP; Kieran Devlin, PP; Augustine Valkenburg, OP. The person named in connection with each study had the primary responsibility for its completion.
