Conference
Inspiration
The Irish Biblical
Association and The Milltown Institute of Theology and Philosophy (Dublin) have
decided to host a joint scholarly colloquium in the year 2000. The focus of the
conference will be on the early stages of the Christian movement. We were
inspired by the celebration of the millennium to look back to the very earliest
stages of Christianity and ask the question, "Where did it all come
from?" Accordingly the Conference is entitled:
|
THE
YEAR 2000 - WHERE HAVE WE COME FROM? A Conference on Christian
Origins
hosted
by
The Irish
Biblical Association and The Milltown Institute
|
The dates for the Conference are
November 5-8, 2000. The approach of the Conference will be a combination of
papers and roundtables. The Irish Biblical Association (www.theology.ie/iba) is
a non-denominational professional association for those involved in teaching
and researching the Jewish and Christian Scriptures. The Milltown Institute
(www.milltown-institute.ie) is the largest faculty of theology in Dublin. The
location of the conference is Milltown Park, Dublin 6, Ireland.

[President of the Irish Biblical
Association
and Convenor of the
Committee] While much of
the celebration planned for the Millennium is either secular or denominational,
we are convinced that there is a place in the millennial year for a scholarly
debate on the beginnings of Christianity. We think that looking back critically
and historically at Christian origins, from which time we date the Millennium,
is a highly appropriate way in which to mark the year 2000.
Of interest to...
The Conference is open to the
public and should be of interest to the following
- people involved in inter-church
and inter-religious dialogue
- students of theology and related
disciplines
- students of the history of
religions
- students of the Hellenistic
period, and especially of Graeco-Roman social / religious
movements
- the general public
The Conference is interdisciplinary
and scholarly, and therefore non-denominational. The speakers will make use of
a variety of methodologies: feminist criticism, historical research,
social-scientific approaches to ancient documents. Rhetorical and liturgical
studies are also represented. Eventually, we plan to publish the collected papers as a
book.
